Winterswijk - September 28, 2017 - Pentair Fairbanks Nijhuis’ bi-directional tidal turbine is one of the 14 nominated innovative technologies eligible for the Aquatech Innovation Award 2017. Together with two other companies, they have been nominated in the category ‘innovation - not yet to market’. The winner will be announced on Monday, October 30, during the opening of the Amsterdam International Water Week and the Aquatech in the RAI in Amsterdam.
Of the 78 entries, the jury has selected 14 entries. Director Gerard Scholten: "We are pleased and proud that our bi-directional tidal turbine has been nominated. The bi-directional tidal turbine is optimized for generating energy from the tide and is almost 100% fish friendly. A unique combination that is not yet available on the market. It is a development of our fish-friendly turbine. What is special about the bi-directional tidal turbine is that the blades can rotate 180 degrees. During prototype testing, we have shown that this technique achieves a particularly high efficiency and thus generates the maximum energy. Also, the fish friendliness of the tidal turbine has been tested and proven. The tested prototype is a 1:15 scale of a future bi-directional turbine, capable of delivering approximately 4,000 kW at a capacity of 340 m³/s and a rotor with a diameter of 8 meters. The bi-directional tidal turbine can be customized and delivered for all existing situations and applications."
About Aquatech Innovation Award
A line-up of 14 innovative technologies, most of them world firsts, has been selected by an expert jury from a record number of entries to this year’s Aquatech Innovation Award. Entries to the award were submitted across five categories: not-yet-to-market; process control technology and automation; transport and storage; water supply / water treatment; and wastewater treatment. The jury identified nominees from each category to be considered as candidates for the overall prize. “The jury needed a lot of discussion this year to make the selection as the top 20% of entries were really strong,” said Jury Chairman Professor Cees Buisman, Scientific Director of Wetsus, European Center of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology. The judging criteria are originality (50%), practicality (25%) and sustainability (25%). One winner selected from the nominees will be announced for each category, and one of these category winners will be announced as the overall winner of the Aquatech Innovation Award 2017.
